Renegades split Double Header with A's, both teams win 1

 June 5, 2021 Renegades v. A’s Recap

Saturday marked the first of multiple double headers for the Jefferson City Renegades, as well as the team’s first outing against the Clarinda A’s.

It would prove to be a back-and-forth night between the two, resulting in two similar games with two opposite outcomes.

The first game kicked off slowly, with neither team scoring until the bottom of the third inning when Jefferson City’s Tommy Reuther sent a solo shot over the centerfield fence to put the Renegades up 1-0.

Reuther, recording three fantastic catches in leftfield for Jefferson City in addition to his homerun, would be the team’s offensive and defensive star of the game.

While the team maintained their lead through the scoreless fourth inning, it painfully slipped away in the top of the fifth. Following a walk, a wild pitch and an error, the A’s went ahead 2-1, while the Renegades struggled to find solid pitching. Starting pitcher Trenton Morrow was replaced by Drew Voss, only to be subsequently taken out and replaced by Deejay Seelbach a few batters later.

Jefferson City’s defense fell flat once again in the top of the sixth, allowing an additional run to cross the plate for Clarinda. Though another pitching change, Carson Wiebe for Seelbach, shut down the A’s in the top of the seventh, the Renegades failed to muster any offensive comeback.

With a final score of 3-1, Jefferson City had taken its first loss.

However, the night wasn’t over for the two teams, and the second game began within minutes of the first.

The A’s scored one run immediately in the top of the first, and it seemed initially that the second game would turn out much like the first. Yet, seemingly motivated by the sting of their first defeat, the Renegades answered in the bottom of the first with another solo homerun off the bat of Carter Mize to tie the game, 1-1.

Three quick outs in the top of the second held Clarinda to their singular run, and the Jefferson City offense once again stepped up to the plate ready for revenge. A triple from Ben Burton brought home Andrew Paten, with Burton then crossing the plate himself on a wild pitch, and the Renegades secured a two-run lead.

Neither team would score the rest of the game.

In a true déjà-vu moment the scoreboard read 3-1 after all seven innings of play, yet this time it was Jefferson City who came out on top.

Now, looking to secure another win at home, the Renegades will once again take on the Nevada Griffons at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vivion Field.
