Late Night Thriller, Renegades Comeback to Beat Mudcats 13-12

June 14, 2021 Renegades v. Mudcats Recap

Monday night’s outing between the Jefferson City Renegades and the Chillicothe Mudcats can only be described as an offensive showdown.

The Mudcats jumped out to an early lead, and one that did not look good for the Renegades. With two outs, a combination of hits, errors and passed balls moved Chillicothe around the bases and brought in four runs.

Singles from Brady Voss and Carter Mize, followed by a sacrifice fly from Hamilton Anderson and a single from Kaden Helsel, would allow Voss and Mize to come home, making the score 4-2 after the first inning.

Both the Mudcats and the Renegades would each pull in one run in the second inning, Jefferson City doing so through singles from David Dell and Mize, a hit by pitch for Voss and an error that allowed Caden Diel on base.

Following a scoreless third inning, the Chillicothe offense exploded again in the top of the fourth off a series of doubles and walks. The team’s three additional runs, unanswered in the bottom of the inning by the Renegades, would move the score to 8-3.

With bats still hot, the Mudcats brought in an additional four runs in the top of the fifth, making the game 12-3 and seemingly killing any momentum for Jefferson City.

However, the Renegades were not out of the game yet.

In an offensive turnaround, Anderson kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a double, followed by a single from Helsel. A single from Andrew Paten and error by the Mudcats left fielder would allow Anderson and Helsel to come home, leaving Paten on second base. A walk for Josef Keilholz left two on for Kolin Demel, who smashed a three-run homer to bring in three more runs. The score now sat at 12-8.

Now having momentum on their side, the Renegades held Chillicothe scoreless and then got right back to work in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a walk for Mize, Anderson stepped up to the plate and sent a shot over the fence to bring in both. Almost immediately after, a hit by pitch for Helsel and a home run for Paten would earn two more runs for Jefferson City.

The game now sat tied, 12-12, and the seventh and eighth innings passed by scoreless.

Unable to generate any more offense, it was up to the Mudcats in the bottom of the ninth to keep the Renegades from scoring.

This, however, they could not do.

After advancing to first base following a walk, Diel would steal second and then come home on a walk-off single from Voss.

Jefferson City had secured a hard-fought, well-earned win over Chillicothe, 13-12.

The Renegades will continue their home stretch at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vivion Field against the St. Joseph Mustangs.
