Renegades start strong, Defeat Griffons 9-3

 June 3, 2021 Renegades v. Griffons Recap

After a close, one-run win the night before, the Jefferson City Renegades looked to obtain a more decided victory on Thursday during the team’s home opener.

Beating the Nevada Griffons 9-3, that is exactly what the Renegades did.

Right off the bat, Jefferson City entered the bottom of the first as an offensive powerhouse. Singles from Tommy Ruether and Hamilton Anderson, paired with a hit by pitch for Brady Voss and a fielder’s choice for Carter Mize, allowed one runner to score and left two more on base for Andrew Paten to step up to the plate and smash a three-run homerun over the fence.

The Renegades continued their strong batting throughout the game. In the bottom of the third, a walk for Hamilton Anderson, a single from Paten and a double from Kolin Demel led to all three crossing the plate. Next, in the bottom of the sixth, a single from Voss, a walk for Mize and another single from Anderson combined to get Voss home and put Jefferson City up 8-0.

In the top of the eighth, the Griffons finally put two runs on the board when an error for the Renegades and a triple from Nevada’s Chase Beiter scored Tyler Davis and Ryan Rodgers.

Right away, however, another hit by pitch for Voss in the bottom of the eighth, followed by singles from Mize and Hamilton, allowed Voss to once again come home.

The Griffons managed to put one more run on the board in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late for Nevada and Jefferson City secured its first win at home, 9-3.

While multiple Renegades demonstrated clear skill on the offensive side of the ball, there is no question that the defensive standout of Thursday’s game was starting pitcher Ethan Osborne. Going seven full innings, Osborne recorded only one hit and three walks while letting up zero runs in his first outing.

Jefferson City returns home for a double header against the Clarinda A’s at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Vivion Field.
